Gisle med Aud och Gudrid

Gisli with his wife Aud and their foster-daughter Gudrid. Illustration from George Webbe Dasent's 1866 edition.

Gisli's saga (Gísla saga Súrssonar) is one of the sagas of Icelanders. Its tragic and eponymous hero is Gísli Súrsson (Þòrbjörnson), a farmer who kills one of his brothers-in-law to avenge the death of another. After doing so, he is outlawed, and spends thirteen years on the run before he is hunted down and killed. The saga seems to have been written in the 13th century but is set in the latter half of the 10th.
